According to Ofcom’s latest survey, half of the UK population never listen to podcasts.

The Podcast Survey 2023 from the communications regulator serves as a reminder that podcasters still have plenty of opportunities to bring new ears to their show – and not just by seeking to convert current podcast listeners.

The survey, conducted from February 27 to March 8, also reported that among those who have listened to podcasts in the past but stopped, 30% said they couldn’t find any podcasts that interested them. And 30% of respondents said that they lost interest in the content of the podcasts they were listening to.

Overall, 25% of those surveyed described themselves as regular podcast listeners and 25% as infrequent listeners, while 50% said they never listened.

As he has done for the past two years, Adam Bowie has analysed the results. The raw data can be found here.

Indie success at Sports Podcast Awards

Independent sports podcasts punched above their weight to earn recognition at the Sports Podcast Awards 2023.

The Crossover with Joe Arlauckas and Nick Luck Daily took first place in the Best Basketball and Best Sports Talk categories respectively, seeing off more heavyweight competitors to strike a blow for the little guys.

The awards, run by the team behind the Sport Industry Awards, returned after last year’s inaugural event and featured entries from 11 different countries. They have been structured in a way that gives everyone a chance of winning – regardless of the size of their show.
