New independent awards launched

New podcast awards have been formed “for those podcasts that are truly free of corporate ties”.

The Independent Podcast Awards will be held for the first time in October.

“We’re taking things back to those who create their content in their backrooms, in their spare time and without the pressures of upsetting their sponsors along the way,” said founder Whynow Media, an online magazine and production studio.

“If you create a podcast but don’t think you have a chance of winning an award against some of the bigger players out there, then this is the place for you.”

The closing date for entries is July 14 and the ceremony will be held on October 12 at the Phoenix Arts Club in London.

The awards have partnered with the Podcasting, Seriously Fund, which offers reimbursement for award entrants who cannot afford the fees, which start at £30.

Entries can be submitted here.

Apple improves discoverability

Apple has increased the size of its New & Noteworthy section as part of measures to improve discoverability.

Apple takes submissions for podcasts which it will consider for promotion in its New & Noteworthy section at no cost. The increase in size should, in theory, improve podcasters’ chances of having their show featured.

Apple has also added nine new subcategories to its Podcasts app: mental health, relationships, self-improvement, personal journals, entrepreneurship, documentary, parenting, books, and language learning.

The company says this will “make it easier for listeners to discover their next favourite show”.

Marler headlines comedy festival

The Joe Marler Show will headline this year’s Cheerful Earful Podcast Festival.

The comedy event will take place from October 31 to November 5 at various venues in London.

Festival founder Giles Gear said: “Cheerful Earful is a joyous celebration of the podcasts that keep us entertained and laughing week-in, week-out. As well as showcasing some of the country’s most popular pods, it’s a platform for smaller shows to connect with a new audience and grow.”

The Podspike-supported Lexx Education, hosted by award-winning comedian Laura Lexx, is part of the line-up for Day 6 at the festival. Get tickets here.
